Promoted Leipzig stun Dortmund in Historic Victory

Promoted RB Leipzig earned their first ever Bundesliga win at the expense of Borussia Dortmund on Matchday 2.

Goals: Keita (89′)

Still something of an unknown quantity in Bundesliga circles, Leipzig made life difficult for Dortmund from the get-go. Timo Werner was a constant nuisance on the counter, while two organised banks of four largely succeeded in starving BVB of the space needed to work their usual magic in the final third. When the visitors did break through on the half-hour mark, Andre Schürrle could only shoot wide.

Encouraged by their first-half showing, Leipzig began to take the game to last season’s runners-up, with a wave of chances falling at both ends of the pitch in the final 20 minutes. After Marcel Halstenberg saw an effort cleared off the goal-line by BVB substitute Raphael Guerreiro and Schürrle clipped the crossbar, Bundesliga debutants Oliver Burke and Naby Keita combined to send the Leipzig faithful into raptures.

Match-winning substitute Keita believes that things could not have gone any better for him, as his late goal secured Leipzig a much deserved victory against Borussia Dortmund. The new signing valacyclovir from Salzburg could hardly contain his delight as he and fellow debutant Burke combined to down the favorites.

Keita only came on late in the match, but in the dying moments of the game he managed to convert an assist by fellow Bundesliga debutant Oliver Burke to give RB Leipzig an historic 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund.

Naby Keita said: “The premiere couldn’t have gone any better. I am delighted about our success. Emil Forsberg and Oliver Burke set up my goal brilliantly.”

Burke said: “It was the perfect game for me to come on and make a change. That is what I’m here for and that is what I’ve done. I’m really happy.”
