Sports have tremendous power. It is where fellowship and rivalry coexist: opponents battle with all their might to achieve victory yet shake hands afterwards for a game well played.
It is where people leave their lives behind, where the game takes prominence over all petty squabbles and daily concerns.
It is a place where fairness reigns supreme. No man or woman is above the rules of the game. An honourable loss is more valuable than a dishonourable victory. Even the greatest of competitors lose all adoration when caught cheating.
It is where class, wealth, status cease to have any importance, where billionaires and paupers compete with skill alone. The poorest of men can become the best in the world through sheer determination.
And, it is where people come together. Friends and foes set their animosity aside for the love of the game.
