24 Jul Renaissance Unchained (4 part series)
When one thinks of the Renaissance one would be forgiven for believing that it was primarily the birthplace of modern, secular thought, reviving the old ideals of Greece and Rome. The famous artists of the time include Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and Jan van Eyck, which you may have learnt about at school or art class.
It wasn’t all secular though, for many of the works of art of the time were created to celebrate and depict religious thoughts and beliefs. The famous artists mentioned above weren’t the only masters of the time either, for there were a great many who didn’t make it into the history books because they failed to fit into the idea of the Renaissance period.
Waldemar Januszczak is an art critic who’s spent years in the streets of Italy and is an expert in Renaissance art. In this four-part series, he will showcase a wide variety of artworks beyond just the famous ones known to you and me, and explore the various themes that ran through the era.
Thursdays @ 22:00 (from 25th of July) on Da Vinci (ch 308)
